ENG 281: How Zoom Sessions Work

All our class sessions will be “synchronous.
There will be two short pre-recorded “asynchronous” video lectures every week, though, to reduce the amount of time we have to spend on Zoom.

Every student in ENG281 must sign up for an account with Zoom (the free option is fine – visit zoom.us; click on “sign up, it’s free”; follow instructions and download all necessary apps from there) AND must run a successful test session on Zoom on their own before our first online class meeting.  Make sure to test ahead of time so you don’t delay or miss our first meeting.

Some tips and requests:

Keep your microphone muted until you are ready to speak.

If you’d like to raise your hand during a Zoom discussion, always use the Zoom “raise hand” feature. Don’t raise your real hand on camera — I’ll likely miss it.

You can also always assume, unless I direct you otherwise, that you’re welcome to jump in without raising your hand. Do so using either your voice (don’t forget to unmute yourself!) or by typing into the public chat window (which I’ll keep an eye on the whole time).
